Characters

Often the way that the character is presented is in itself a reflection of what we expect from a character. Is the drawing style simplified because the character is going to be 2d Animated sprite? How is it stylized? Is it gritty and realistic or is it aimed at children?

Sometimes the brief is based on an actual person. This can be wonderful to play with because real people are rich and interesting with loads of material and satisfying details to draw from.

Sometimes creating interesting characters is only half the battle. In many franchises, the defining element is often the villain.

Sometimes subverting expectations is what creates or defines our comedy. How we subvert expectations speaks to our wit and creativity.

Being able to present our characters often means supplying more than one option.

How we work with people defines our creativity too. Respecting boundaries, taking criticism and suggestion are all key elements of working with other creatives.

Sometimes we get the chance to work with characters created by other people or within thematic universes. There are nonetheless many ways to be creative within the framework of someone else's vision.

Sometimes historical and cultural content can provide powerful insight into a project, as with the above project BRUXOS DA ILIA. The Druid figure served as inspiration for my interpretation of the Logo for a local Brewery.

Sometimes we must be prepared to try a style with which we are less comfortable. Nonetheless, growth without change is impossible.
